Robin, with Tawny Owl Hooting in Background

I post this clip, not for its quality, but mainly to show Stifyn, whom I met in the park yesterday. I've heard the occasional Tawny Owl in Singleton Park over the last few years, and even saw one a couple of months back, but thought I was hearing things a week or so ago, when, on at least two successive days, I heard an owl hooting as early as 5.30 p.m.
Anyway, here's conclusive proof that I've not gone (totally) mad. I was filming this Robin in the Ornamental Gardens area, on Wednesday, April 18th, when an owl hooted nearby. The 'too-whit, too-whoo' occurs after about 13-14 seconds:

Anyone else heard Tawny Owls hooting during daylight?

  1. Yes, that is what I heard too in the same location but on a different day. So, I can discount the nearby teenagers larking about and we do have an owl in the park after a very long absence. The race is on now to get a photo of it and also that woodpecker.

  2. Robins seem to be 'the flavour of the month', Jeremy, at present! What a beautiful little clip. I love the way the robin's feathers flutter ... presumably it was a breezy evening? We've certainly had very windy conditions here, and the flowering cherries have not kept their blossom for long. Well, I look forward to seeing photos of that elusive owl! We keep hearing one from our window ... and a Cuckoo has now arrived in the nearby wood, according to our local paper!

  3. So nice...that wind was pretty strong.

  4. Your video of the robin is so great to see Jeremy. Never heard the call of an owl before. I keep my fingers crossed to capture the owl one day.
    Have a great weekend.

  5. Enjoyed the video, what a beautiful bird, and the owl calling is a bonus.

  6. Unusual to hear a Tawny in the day.
Love the clip of the Robin. Great little birds, and full of character.

  7. I heard the owl again on Friday afternoon and it came from exactly the same location as before.I think it is roosting in that cluster of tall trees at the bottom left of the ornamental garden by the park entrance into the university, just behind Singleton Abbey. I went to investigate and walked around that area very slowly and quietly but I did not sight the bird. A pair of Jays were very bold and came very close to me for some nuts, the closest encounter I have had so far with these birds which normally keep their distance. Perhaps after all these months they are geting used to me?

  8. It's impressive that you are getting thoughts from this piece of writing as well as from our dialogue made here.
