A pleasant surprise this evening when I popped down to check the trail camera which I had left out at one of my Fox dens. As I was passing the first den, some movement near the holes caught my eye, and I was amazed to see three or four tiny Fox cubs (kits in America?) wandering around. I dived down behind a bush to get out my equipment (ooh, er!), and was able to set up only about twenty metres from them. They barely seemed to notice I was there, only looking with mild interest in my direction when I fired off a burst from my camera:
By the size of them, and by the fact that I haven't seen them before, I wouldn't be surprised if this is their first time above ground. Anyway, after a few minutes, as the hazy sun disappeared, they went underground, and didn't re-emerge in the next half-hour, so I let them be, only to return later, but there was no sign of them this time. The weather doesn't look good for photography for the next day or two, but I've left my trail camera nearby to monitor them, so here's hoping for some more footage and photographs of them as they grow over the next few weeks.
Thank you for sharing these gorgeous pictures. You got some great pictures with your quick thinking!

ReplyDeleteThanks you Jeremy for showing us the Fox cubs, they are fantastic, excellent photography.
ReplyDeleteYou must be so thrilled with these photos, Jeremy. I'm really not sure I have ever seen photos of such young cubs before. Can't wait to see what your camera picks up next ...
ReplyDeleteI think this was a lucky moment for you to see the Fox cubs/whelps (in German "der Welpe", it's the same word for a baby dog).
ReplyDeleteThank you for this wonderful pictures. I hope you'll see them again.
They're so funny to observe.
Have a nice day.

How very sweet a surprise for you!!! Sadly, I found a kit along the road way yesterday, freshly killed and not a mark on it. I took some images, just because it was the only way, that it would be remembered;'(~

Hi Jeremy
ReplyDeleteThese are dream images and are absolutely beautiful. I love them. Did I say that they were beautiful already?
Adorable.... Beautiful... Janny
ReplyDeleteStunning shots Jeremy and what a great encounter!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photographs, images of the young fox like from the dream. I am greeting
ReplyDeleteFantastic images and loved seeing those fox cubs.
ReplyDeleteStunning photos !! Cute as hell those cubs. Makes me mad that people like to hunt these creatures. Watched the video as well. Methinks Jeremy left some nuts or some other goodies in front of the trail camera???? If so, why not....good idea.
ReplyDeleteFollowing on from our chat yesterday I have been on the RSPB web site and others to listen to audio of woodpeckers. Confirms that we keep hearing Green Woodpeckers but never see them. The photos I took were of the female Greater Spotted entering the nest I have loaded the photos onto Picasa Web Albums but they are not too good. There are other birds in the album (local) plus others from various parts of the world. I have been able to identify them all bar a small bird of prey in a palm tree in Cyprus. I particularly like a cuckoo I managed to get a photo of through the dense canopy in Cuba. If I recall correctly it is called the Great Lizard Cuckoo??? If you want to look the link is below:

Thanks for your comments.
ReplyDeleteStifyn, I left a bit of cat food to encourage the Fox to linger in front of the camera. I checked my trail camera which I'd left at the Fox den yesterday evening. There's been no sign of the cubs coming out in daylight again, but they have come out with their mother at night. Enjoyed your woodpecker shots on the link - will try to get down and take some of my own before they leave the nest.
That must have blown you away! Lovely stuff!
